The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is a test to determine your knowledge of the French language.

This test is for non-Francophone candidates (aged 16 upwards) and is designed to determine their general linguistic ability in French in each of the core language skills. In particular it attracts students, businesses and international organizations. The TCF is the official test for foreign students seeking admission to a bachelor’s level course in higher education in France.

All candidates receive a certificate indicating a result, which places them at one of the 6 levels of the Common European framework of reference for languages (A1 to C2). This means you cannot fail the TCF. Certificates are valid for a period of 2 years.

The TCF comprises three mandatory sections:

  • oral comprehension
  • mastering structures
  • written comprehension

The sections on oral and written expression are optional.

The TCF is also available in an electronic version that can be done using a computer.
You can sit the TCF as many times as you like, but you must wait 60 days between each test.
